Question and Answer Information about September 2010! When is the first day of school and for how long? Tuesday, September 7th is the first day of school for all grades with the exception of our new Kindergarten students. We will be in session from 8:45-11:15. When do regular school
hours begin? Regular school hours begin on Wednesday, September 8th. School hours will be from 8:45-2:45. Where will students go on the first day of school? Students will report to the classrooms they were in for the end of the 2009-2010 school year. When can students be moved to their
2010-2011 classes? The hope is that we can move to our new classes at the end of the first week of school. This is completely dependent upon firm confirmation of Willway’s enrolment numbers as of Wednesday, September 8th, and, the enrolment numbers at the district level. (The Ministry of Education formula for determining class size and funding is complex. It is based on whole district aggregate numbers. This means that individual school class sizes and configurations are affected by the whole district aggregate numbers. Individual schools can not move into new class configurations until the whole district aggregate numbers are confirmed.) The district office will direct individual schools as to when we can move into our new class configurations. What about our new Kindergarten students? 2010-2011 Kindergarten students schedule:

Who will my child’s teacher be next year? Teacher, Educational Assistant, and Administrator teams meet on the last week of June and in early September to set tentative student placements. Determining class placement is always complex and challenging as each team strives to do what is best for individual students and for whole classes given the grade configurations we must use. (Grade configurations are often determined by enrolment numbers at each grade level and class size requirements.) Our staff works very hard to make the best class placement decisions for your child. Your trust in our decisions and judgments about where your child
is placed will go a long way in determining the success your child has in his/her school year. What about a parent’s request for their child’s placement? This is the process that the principal, Mrs. Penn uses. 1. The educational staff decides upon the best grade configurations given the enrolment numbers at each grade level. 2. The educational staff then determine, at a team meeting, the criteria for the composition of each class given the grade configurations. 3. The educational staff meets to discuss placement of individual students. (This part of the process requires considerable thought and takes a lot of time as the team tries very hard to meet the needs of all students.) 4. The principal then checks to see if the parental requests and the educational team decisions ‘match’. If there is no match with a parental request and that student’s placement, the principal will ask for
clarification of that particular student’s placement. If the reason for that child’s placement makes good educational sense, the educator’s decision will take precedence over the parent’s request. Please note: The principal will meet with the parent in order to explain the reasoning regarding the educational team’s decision.
